PocketPal Kids editorial principles
We write about children’s financial education for parents and caregivers. Our job is to understand what the research says and turn it into practical ideas that families can try at home.
PocketPal Kids content is educational and is not personalised financial advice.
The sources we use
Where possible, we use original research papers, official reports and datasets, and publications from universities, regulators and research organisations. We use secondary sources for context and to locate the original material, not as a substitute for it.
We aim to place a source close to every important or surprising claim so readers can check the evidence themselves.
How we check research
Before publication, we check:
- when the research was published and when the data was collected;
- the country where the study took place;
- the number and ages of the children or families involved;
- what the researchers actually measured;
- the limitations reported by the authors;
- whether a newer version of the report or dataset is available.
If a study was conducted in only one country, we do not present its results as a universal standard for every family. If there is no reliable answer yet, we say so.
Where evidence ends and our recommendation begins
We separate three things:
- the research findings — what the authors actually found;
- our interpretation — what those findings may mean for a family;
- a PocketPal practical recommendation — a rule, calculation, conversation or small household experiment.
Our family experience helps us identify useful questions and test whether an idea is practical at home. It does not replace research or prove that the same approach will suit every child.
Practical value
We want parents to leave each article with a clear next step: a conversation topic, a simple calculation, a family rule, a comparison table or a small one-to-four-week experiment.
We mention PocketPal only when a feature genuinely helps with that step: recording a task, tracking a reward, creating a goal or seeing savings grow.
Use of digital tools
Digital tools may be used to find sources, structure information and edit text. Factual claims are checked against the cited sources, and the PocketPal Kids editorial team makes the final publication decision.
Children and privacy
We do not publish names, photographs or other information that could identify our children. Family stories include only the details needed to understand the situation without compromising the children’s privacy.
We do not shame children for mistakes, spending decisions or changing their minds. Financial literacy is a skill developed through practice, not a judgement of a child’s character.
Corrections and updates
If we find a significant error, we correct it. The update date changes after a substantive review or meaningful revision.
A correction to a number, conclusion or research link is noted in the article. Readers can report a possible error through the contact form or by emailing the editorial team.
